The Mboko vs Buksa match is set to be a thrilling semifinal showdown after Katherine Mboko’s comeback win over Fernandez. The 19-year-old Canadian found her rhythm after a shaky start, winning 11 of the last 14 games to reach her next big challenge against Spain’s Cristina Buksa.
The 19-year-old Mboko overcame a difficult opening set by increasing her first serve success percentage, allowing her to win 11 of the match’s final 14 games to defeat her 23-year-old opponent from Laval, Quebec.
“I didn’t have a really good start,” Mboko admitted after the match. “But I have to give [Fernandez] credit because she was playing very good and aggressive tennis, which made it difficult for me to find my rhythm. ‘She’s playing very well,’ and so I just wanted to stay with her as long as possible and find a way,” I kept telling myself. Gradually, I gained more confidence in my skills, and eventually, I was able to hit my shots more effectively.””
In Saturday’s Mboko vs Buksa match, the Toronto native will face Spain’s Cristina Buksa, who easily defeated Maya Joint 6-3, 6-1.
In her career, Mboko has faced Buksa only once, when she won the first qualifying round 6-3, 6-2 on the clay courts of Rome earlier this year.
