Tamil Nadu parties move Supreme Court against SIR of electoral rolls, calling the Election Commission’s move “undemocratic” and warning that it could delete voters ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. A multi-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday decided to take the issue to the apex court.
The late actor-politician Vijayakanth’s DMDK, which is not in any alliance, was also present at the meeting, along with 44 other political parties. The BJP and AIADMK were not invited. TTV Dhinakaran’s AMMK, which recently split from the NDA, S. Ramadoss’s PMK, and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) were invited but declined.
The opposition argued that the SIR of electoral rolls violates democratic norms.
The parties urged the Election Commission to stop the amendment process in a motion adopted at the meeting, claiming that the SIR was being conducted even while the Supreme Court had not yet rendered a decision in a matter pertaining to the Bihar process. “The SIR is unacceptable,” the resolution declared. Only after the shortcomings have been fixed and with enough time following the 2026 assembly elections should it be implemented.”
The resolution asserted that the change might deny minority and opposition-leaning people their right to vote and accused the Election Commission of being a “puppet of the BJP government at the Center.” “There is no doubt that the unilaterally enacted SIR… aims to deprive the people of their right to vote and bury democracy,” it said.
The DMK-led government also talked about problems with administration and the weather. They said that the North-East monsoon would happen at the same time as the revision period, from November 4 to December 4, which would make it hard for rural voters and officials to follow the rules. The resolution said, “The exercise seems to be meant to take a lot of voters off the electoral roll.”
