Gukesh Dommaraju was born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, India and is the current World Chess Champion. He became the youngest undisputed world champion at the age of 18 and has brought glory to the country by achieving a FIDE rating of 2750 at the youngest age.

Known as a chess master, Gukesh Dommaraju achieved the title of Grandmaster at the age of just 12 and has won several gold medals in the Under-12 World Youth Chess Championship and the 2018 Asian Youth Chess Championship. In 2019, he became the second youngest Grandmaster at that time.

What made the win even more remarkable was that Gukesh took advantage of a crucial mistake by Carlsen in a timing problem to turn around a completely lost position.

It is extraordinary to see Magnus Carlsen lose in classical chess, and almost unheard of for him to falter from a winning position. But in this dramatic encounter, the endgame promotion race went in Gukesh’s favour, giving him his second classical win of the tournament – his first was against Hikaru Nakamura.

A dejected Carlsen collapsed on the table after the loss, but showed sportsmanship by patting

 on the back. Still reflecting on his win, Gukesh humbly said, “It was a completely lost game. 99 times out of 100, I would have lost this game – it was just a lucky day today.” In other results, Arjun Erigaisi also won the Armageddon round against Wei Yi, earning him 1.5 points.
